History

1950 The predecessor of AECMA "Association Internationale des Constructeurs de Matériel Aérospatial, AICMA" was founded in 1950. It was a Forum primarily for social and informal contacts.

1960's Extension of membership to all Western European Aerospace Industries in the wake of first generation international cooperative programmes.


1961 The organisation of the emerging space industry, EUROSPACE was founded in 1961 to foster the development of space activities in Europe, and to promote a better understanding of space concerns.

1973 AICMA became AECMA (European Association of Aerospace Industries) in the context of growing European awareness and increased trans-national cooperation. It continued to give emphasis on technical issues.

1976 The European Defence Industries Group, EDIG, was founded in 1976 as a body responsive to the National Armaments Directors (NADs) of the Independent European Programme Group (IEPG) nations. The aim of EDIG was to gather together the European Defence industry's positions to be further provided for the policy making bodies. In 1984, EDIG was formally recognized by the IEPG as "the designated forum to advise the IEPG on industrial matters".

1990 The Brussels Office of EDIG was opened in 1990.

1991 The Brussels Office of AECMA was opened in 1991.

2004 AECMA, EDIG and EUROSPACE merged to form AeroSpace and Defence Industries Association of Europe, ASD
