General Assembly & Board
ASD is led by the General Assembly (formed by all Members of ASD) and the Board (composed by 17 CEOs of Companies and 10 Heads of National Members). The President of ASD Mr Alessandro Profumo, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Leonardo has been appointed for 2020-2022. The Secretariat is led by a Secretary General, Mr Jan Pie, who was appointed in 2013.
The General Assembly is the supreme decision making body of the Association. It determines the overall strategy and policies of the Association. The General Assembly elects the Board, approves the budget and annual accounts.
The Board is in charge of the management of the Association. The Board ensures that the Association achieves its objectives, establishes and maintains liaison with external bodies, provides direction and guidance for the Secretary General who takes on the day-to-day management of ASD. The Board elects its Chairman, who will also be the President of the Association, from among its members.
ASD receives its strategic guidance from the direct involvement of CEOs coming from major European aerospace and defence industries. ASD provides a forum for government and industry representatives to exchange views and resolve issues related to the industry.
The day-to-day work of ASD is conducted within a framework of working bodies, made up of experts from among the membership and supported by staff of the Secretariat. Strategically located in the heart of Brussels, the ASD team is responsible for major items of policy work, create and maintain close links with the European Institutions and international organisations.
ASD works closely together with its members in four Business Units (Civil Aviation, Defence, Security and Space) that are sector focused and six Commissions (Environment, R&T, Economic Legal & Trade, Services, Supply Chain and External Affairs) that address cross-functional areas.
Business Units and Transversal Commissions develop the strategies and define the objectives in their respective domains. They are supported by several Committees and Working Groups. These supporting groups are either permanent or ad-hoc and focus on particular issues. They discuss the detailed topics, draft position papers and issue recommendations to the industry and other stakeholders.
