ASD welcomes progress made in June by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Council regarding the implementation of CORSIA, the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation.
Since the adoption of CORSIA in October 2016, intense work to develop implementing rules for CORSIA day-to-day functioning was undertaken in ICAO.
At the ICAO Council meeting held between 11th to 29th June 2018, Council members endorsed a first package of criteria for the implementation of the scheme. Further discussion will be held at the next Council meeting between 29th October and 16th November 2018 to adopt the remaining elements.
This is an important step forward to ensure the functioning of the first global scheme covering an entire industrial sector.
Our industry is committed to reducing its environmental footprint and has set ambitious environmental objectives in the short and long-term, including carbon neutral growth from 2020.
We aspire to meet those objectives through a combination of measures based on four pillars. The first three pillars are improved technology, more efficient operations and infrastructure improvements. We regard as a fourth pillar a global market-based measure to fill the remaining emissions gap.
In this view, ASD looks forward to the upcoming discussion in the autumn on the last important details of CORSIA.
