Civil aviation


The European civil aerospace sector is a major pillar of the European economy, generating a turnover of approximately €99.3 billion and employing over 1 million workers throughout the EU and beyond. Its commitment of investing in and producing state of the art technology makes it a champion for exports, contributing to the European trade balance and creating prosperity for the European economy.

ASD acts as a catalyst for the development of common European manufacturing industry positions on policies and initiatives in the field of Civil Aviation. It strives to ensure that the development of policies, projects and regulatory initiatives support the sustainability of the European Aeronautics industries. In particular, ASD maintains a regular and close engagement with the European Commission, the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), Public-Private Partnerships such as the SESAR Joint Undertaking (SESAR JU for the modernisation of the Single European Sky), as well as other national, European and international stakeholders such the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO).

In addition, ASD holds the secretariat of the Sky and Space Intergroup, an informal network of Members of the European Parliament, cross-party and cross-nationality, who recognize the critical importance of aviation and space technologies and their impact on Europe’s citizens and economy. The Intergroup serves as a forum where expertise can be shared and legislative work can be advanced on specific topics.

The ASD Civil Aviation Business Unit (CABU), chaired by Mr. Marc Hamy, Airbus, reunites senior representatives from the major civil aviation manufacturers and their supply chain in Europe. The Vice-Chairs are Gregoire Aladjidi at Safran, Simon Carlisle at Rolls Royce and Luigi Cereti at Leonardo. The CABU is supported by a number of policy or technical groups that maintain a focus on the sector’s key issues. These include, among others:

  • The evolution of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), which certifies aircraft and equipment and supports industry projects at the global level

  • The impact of environmental policies on aviation, such as the EU REACH legislation, climate action and sustainable alternative fuels

  • new, risk-based regulations relying on industry’s standards, and new certification methods aimed at reducing development time and costs and at addressing emerging technologies;

  • EU Research Programmes such as SESAR2020 and Cleansky2 that ensure continued research in enabling technologies to make progress on the safety, efficiency and environmental impact of aviation

  • The development of a civil aviation cybersecurity framework to tackle this growing threat and sustain civil aviation as the safest mode of transport

  • The integration of drones in the European skies, to safely open this new era in aviation
