The European aerospace and defence industry is continually searching for more environmentally friendly alternative technologies for engines, aircraft design and sustainable fuels. There is ever increasing pressure on the aviation industry to reduce its environmental impact with respect to noise, emissions (NOx, HC, CO, smoke) and fuel burn (CO2). ASD strives to ensure a high level of sustainability while answering to a growing demand for air transport by our citizens and businesses.
Today’s aircraft and engines are much more fuel efficient than earlier generations, and constant research ensures that the next generations of aircraft models will lead to even higher emission reductions. Together with the European Commission, Member States and leading universities, Industry has set ambitious goals to protect the environment and the energy supply under the Advisory Council for Aviation Research and Innovation in Europe (ACARE) Flightpath 2050 Goals. These include a 75% reduction in CO2 emissions, a 90% reduction in NOx emissions and perceived noise from aircraft by 65% relative to a 2000 baseline.
ASD actively contributes to these efforts through its Environment Commission and working groups, consisting of representatives of national trade associations and ASD member companies. This commission closely monitors relevant legislation and policy at EU level and develops common positions and strategies on topics including sustainable alternative fuels, noise, emissions, chemicals legislation and circular economy.
In addition to promoting ASD Members’ interests at EU level, the Environment Commission coordinates the work of ASD members at the Aircraft Noise and Engine Emissions Committee (ANEEC) under the ambit of the International Coordination Council of Aerospace Industries Associations (ICCAIA). As the European representation within ICCAIA, ASD contributes as an observer to the work of the Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP), the UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) environmental committee. ASD has the current chairmanship of ICCAIA and its groups. Through CAEP, ICAO has developed a range of standards, policies and guidance in support of an environmentally responsible civil aviation industry. Examples include a CO2 standard and the first global sectoral climate agreement.
The Environment Commission is chaired by Kevin Goddard from Airbus and vice-chaired by Mr Francis Couillard from Safran.
