Bloomberg highlights defence challenges, as ASD urges firm commitments

A Bloomberg report on the annual investment gap in Europe’s defence sector quoted ASD Secretary General Jan Pie calling for long-term procurement contracts and a unified “buy European” strategy.

A Bloomberg Intelligence analysis published on 13 March underscored the monumental task facing Europe’s defence sector – noting an annual investment gap between $340 billion and $720 billion as NATO members rush to modernise their capabilities. Against this backdrop, ASD Secretary General Jan Pie has been clear in his call for a European strategy that goes beyond just funding.

In an interview with Andrea Palasciano for Bloomberg, Jan Pie stressed that the key to meeting these challenges lies in securing “firm commitments” in the form of long-term procurement contracts. Jan Pie also underlined the importance of demand aggregation, saying that it would drive down both delivery times and costs – making a strong case for “buying European”.

Sustainable growth in the defence sector hinges on coordinated, long-term strategies rather than short-term fixes. The challenges outlined by Bloomberg, including supply chain constraints and contractor backlogs, further reinforce the necessity for a unified European response.
