Estonian public television coverage of European Defence & Security Summit
Estonian public broadcast television ran a story on the challenges facing defence production in Europe, and excerpts of interviews from the European Defence & Security Summit with ASD Secretary General, Jan Pie; and Frank Haun, CEO of ASD Member KNDS.
Jan Pie is quoted on the challenges for the defence industry, in addition to access to finance:
"This trend has moved in the wrong direction, affecting other inputs as well. It's about skills, energy, insurance and commercial technologies. We now have examples that did not exist last year, where large companies refuse to sell machine tools to defence companies because they do not want a client with a protective background."
Frank Haun is quoted on the issue of interoperability:
"We have standard tanks in Europe called the Leopard. Finland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Germany and Greece use them. Do you think all these Leopard tanks could be operated by different countries? Not. They all want their own. They want their own radios, their own navigation systems, their own fire control, their own sensors. And then it starts with logistics and spare parts. Especially in Ukraine, when one country uses so many different types, there is no logic in this.”
