SM-0001 Revision C nears finalisation
A well-attended and successful meeting of the SM-0001 standard core team took place at the ASD offices in Brussels on 15-16 April. The focus of the meeting was to finalise Revision C of the standard, further strengthening global applicability for maintenance organisations, safety culture principles, and strengthening the need to ensure independence of the staff making decisions affecting safety and airworthiness and acknowledging FAA SMS regulation (14CFR Part 5) extended to TC and PC holders in 2024.

The international industry Standard for Implementing a Safety Management System (SMS) at Design, Manufacturing and Maintenance Providers, SM-0001, has been jointly developed by ASD-Europe, Aerospace Industries Association of America (AIA), Aerospace Industries Association of Brazil (AIAB), Aerospace Industries Association of Canada (AIAC) and the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA). The Standard was developed to enable the aviation industry to implement a Safety Management System (SMS) consistent with the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s (ICAO) Annex 19 Safety Management edition 2, appendix 2, to the convention on International Civil Aviation. It is intended to support demonstration of compliance with applicable SMS requirements from aviation authorities or for voluntary SMS implementation.
The next step is to ballot the draft SMS-0001 Rev C to the member companies of the Associations (AIA, AIAB, AIAC, ASD, GAMA) and the CMT Authorities by May 2025 with a publication target and request for Authority recognition as Acceptable Means of Compliance by September 2025.
