ASD Digital Transformation Commission engages European Commission on strategic digital priorities
The ASD Digital Transformation Commission advanced discussions with the European Commission on AI, security, and defence innovation, emphasising Europe’s AI leadership and public–private collaboration for strategic digital sovereignty
The ASD Digital Transformation Commission held a high-level dialogue on 2 April with the European Commission, engaging Director of the European Commission’s Artificial Intelligence Office, Lucilla Sioli, and her team. Discussions focused on advancing Europe’s digital transformation in defence, security, civil aviation, and space – key priorities for both European institutions and ASD members investing in cutting-edge technologies.
Two central themes emerged from the discussions. Europe’s leadership in artificial intelligence remains a cornerstone of its digital ambitions, with the European aerospace, security, and defence sectors playing a pivotal role in realising the vision of a globally competitive “AI Continent”. These industries are positioned as critical drivers of technological advancement and strategic autonomy.
Additionally, participants underscored the growing importance of public–private collaboration in navigating today’s geopolitical landscape. Strengthening partnerships across industries, governments, and institutions was identified as essential to accelerating innovation in defence, security, civil aviation, and space – sectors where aligned efforts are vital to addressing shared challenges and securing Europe’s technological future.
Launched in February 2024, the ASD Digital Transformation Commission aims to bolster Europe’s leadership in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and cloud infrastructure while enhancing industrial resilience and cybersecurity. The Digital Transformation Commission’s work programme prioritises identifying innovation obstacles, promoting partnerships, and advancing Europe’s digital sovereignty.
