Strengthening Europe’s digital sovereignty: ASD’s new Digital Transformation Commission
ASD’s Digital Transformation Commission aims to support Europe’s leadership in AI, quantum computing, and cloud. Our initiative strengthens industrial resilience, enhances competitiveness, and ensures Europe remains at the forefront of critical technologies.
In a challenging geopolitical landscape, our members are committed to driving digital transformation across Europe in defence, security, civil aviation and space. Recognising the need to navigate this evolving environment, ASD has launched the Digital Transformation Commission to address opportunities and risks arising from regulatory developments, emerging technologies, and security challenges. Through this initiative, we aim to strengthen Europe’s resilience, safeguard its core interests, and reinforce its competitive edge.
The Digital Transformation Commission convened for the first time on 5 February, bringing together industry leaders from ASD’s membership to define its strategic objectives and work programme. Roberto Viola, Director General of the Directorate-General of Communication, Networks, Content and Technology at the European Commission set the scene. With digital transformation reshaping the aerospace, security, and defence sectors, the launch comes at a pivotal moment for Europe, as it seeks to advance Europe’s leadership in strategic technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and cloud infrastructure, while strengthening Europe’s cybersecurity capabilities to safeguard vital assets and data.

Jan Pie, Secretary General of ASD, underscored that collaboration between the public and private sectors is essential to securing Europe’s technological sovereignty. ASD’s members are working to ensure Europe remains at the forefront of innovation, leveraging digital transformation to enhance industrial competitiveness and security across our sectors.
“As the industry that connects and protects, we are committed to actively supporting the competitive development of our industries in Europe and worldwide,” ASD Digital Transformation Senior Manager Claudia Gherman said. “This Commission will serve as a catalyst for collaboration, innovation, and resilience in the face of growing challenges.”
The Digital Transformation Commission’s work programme will focus on identifying barriers to innovation, fostering cross-sector partnerships, and promoting policies that enhance Europe’s technological sovereignty. The establishment of the Commission underscores ASD’s commitment to supporting digital transformation across Europe’s aerospace, security, and defence sectors. As the continent navigates a complex geopolitical and technological landscape, the Commission’s efforts will be instrumental in shaping a secure, competitive, and innovative future for Europe.
