Defence as a sustainable investment: ASD at Frankfurt conference
Can defence be a sustainable investment? ASD Secretary General Jan Pie discusses the future of investing in the defence industry at Frankfurt’s top finance conference
ASD Secretary General Jan Pie joined a panel discussion on “Investors’ Response to Surging Global Military Spending” at the International Capital Markets Conference in Frankfurt, hosted by DZ Bank. The event gathered over 300 financial market experts from Europe and beyond, offering a key platform to share ASD’s perspectives on defence financing.
Jan Pie emphasised that sustainable investment and defence investment are not contradictory, highlighted the financing challenges faced by SMEs in the defence supply chain, and called for the European Investment Bank (EIB) to drop its defence lending exclusion – a move that would send a strong signal to financial markets.
The conference, co-organised with KfW and OMFIF, covered topics ranging from global economic trends to energy security, reinforcing the growing relevance of defence in investment discussions.
